It wasn’t until I was quite grown up that I learned that some people don’t keep flour in their homes. For some folks, if they decide to make a batch of cookies they have to go out and buy a bag of flour. This shocked me, because in my mom’s home and in my grandma’s home, you could always find at least fifty pounds of flour - and that’s if they were running out!
Mom and Grandma each had a large green metal can full of flour with a green Tupperware scoop inside. From the big green can, they filled a repurposed plastic ice cream bucket that was kept in the kitchen. We all knew the drill: if you needed flour you got it from the ice cream bucket. If that was empty, you took it downstairs to fill it from the big green can, and if that was getting low you refilled it from one of several large bags of flour kept in the cold storage.
In my memory we never, ever even came close to running out of flour. So you can forgive me for thinking that everyone on the planet kept a supply of at least fifty pounds of flour at all times!
